How to Register Your Car in Dubai

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority runs one of the most efficient vehicle registration systems in the region — most cars are registered in under an hour. Whether you are registering a new purchase, a used car transfer or an import, this is the complete process, current for 2025.

What You Need Before You Start

  • Emirates ID (original) — or passport with residence visa for new residents.
  • Valid UAE driving license details on file.
  • Insurance certificate valid for 13 months (arranged before registration).
  • For used cars: the seller’s mulkiya (registration card) and a passed technical inspection.
  • For imports: customs clearance certificate and export documents from origin.

Step 1: Insurance First

No registration happens without insurance. Comprehensive cover for a standard sedan starts around AED 1,200–2,500 annually; luxury and modified vehicles need declared values and specialist policies. Your insurer uploads the certificate directly to the RTA system — no paperwork needed on your side.

Step 2: Technical Inspection (Used Cars)

Vehicles over three years old — and all ownership transfers — require a technical inspection at an RTA-approved center: Tasjeel, Shamil, Wasel or Autotest. The test covers brakes, emissions, lights, chassis and tires, takes roughly 30 minutes and costs around AED 150–170. New cars from a UAE dealer skip this step entirely.

Thirty minutes at a testing center — the only physical step in the process.

Step 3: Registration and Payment

Complete registration at an RTA customer happiness center, through the RTA Dubai app, or via the Dubai Drive platform. Pay the registration fee (approximately AED 380), plus plate fees (AED 35–500 depending on type), and the AED 20 knowledge and innovation fees. You receive your mulkiya digitally and physically, with plates printed on the spot.

Fees and Timelines at a Glance

  • Registration: ~AED 380 · Inspection: ~AED 170 · Plates: AED 35+ · Knowledge fee: AED 20.
  • New car, dealer-registered: same day, often handled entirely by the showroom.
  • Used car transfer: half a day including inspection.
  • Imported vehicle: add customs clearance and compliance checks — allow one to two weeks.

Renewal, Fines and the Annual Rhythm

Registration renews annually and the process shrinks each time: insurance refresh, a quick inspection for older vehicles, and payment through the RTA app in minutes. Settle outstanding traffic fines first — the system blocks renewal until they clear. Vehicles over 30 days past expiry accumulate daily fines, and driving unregistered risks impoundment, so most owners renew in the final month of validity.

Registering an Imported or Luxury Vehicle

Imports add two steps: customs duty (5% of CIF value) and a conformity check that the vehicle meets GCC specifications. Vehicles bought from our cars for sale inventory arrive fully documented — registration is a same-day formality we complete with you, plates included. Questions on a specific vehicle? Insurance, inspection, registration — in Dubai, the whole ritual fits between lunch and the school run.
