Before registering a vehicle in Dubai, you need a Traffic File Number. This is issued by the RTA.
✅ You do NOT need a UAE driving license to register a car but you DO need a traffic file number.
You can open one by visiting any authorized RTA center or service provider with any of the following:
- A valid Dubai-issued residence visa
- A tenancy contract in your name
- Proof of employment in Dubai
Once you have the traffic file, you’re ready to proceed.
All used vehicles must go through an RTA inspection. This costs AED 170 and is done at authorized RTA inspection centers.
🧠 Note: This test only checks if your car is road-legal — it doesn’t detect prior accidents or hidden repairs. If you want a full mechanical or body inspection, get it done by a trusted workshop.
After the vehicle passes inspection, you’ll need insurance.
You can find insurance counters at most RTA testing centers or compare rates online through brokers.
Present:
- Your Emirates ID
- The inspection report
- The car ownership document
- Your traffic file number
You can choose third-party or comprehensive coverage. Your insurance provider will help guide you on what’s best for your situation.
Both buyer and seller must be present at the RTA center for registration.
Here’s what you need to bring:
Original Emirates ID
Emirates ID copy
Vehicle ownership document
Existing plate numbers (if applicable)
Trade license copy
MOA (Memorandum of Association)
NOC on company letterhead with stamp
Emirates ID copy of the representative
If selling: Owner of the company or a shareholder with 50%+ must be present
After registration, collect your new number plates and registration card (Mulkiya).
